CPAP FAQs

What is a CPAP machine?

A CPAP machine is used to treat sleep apnea, a disorder that causes you to stop breathing while sleeping. The machine provides continuous pressurized airflow for uninterrupted breathing.

Is a CPAP machine a cure for sleep apnea?

While there is no cure for sleep apnea, a CPAP machine is one way to treat it. The machine allows you to sleep better by relieving your symptoms and helping you continuously breathe throughout the night.

What are the differences between CPAP, BiPAP and Auto PAP machines?

CPAP machines release a constant air pressure level.

Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) machines release two air pressure levels for breathing in and out.

Auto positive airway pressure (Auto PAP) machines adjust air pressure levels based on airway resistance.

Visit your doctor to discuss which machine is right for you.

What is the proper way to clean a CPAP machine?

CPAP machines work best with proper maintenance. Regularly cleaning the parts will extend the life of your machine and benefit your overall health.

Follow these directions to clean your CPAP machine:

  1. Unplug your CPAP machine from the power source.
  2. Disconnect the mask and air tubing from the CPAP machine.
  3. Disassemble your mask into three parts (headgear, cushion and frame).
  4. In a sink or tub, clean your headgear, cushion and frame to remove any oils. Gently rub with soap and warm, drinking-quality water. Avoid using strong cleaning products to prevent damage or harmful residues.
  5. Rinse again thoroughly with warm, drinking-quality water.
  6. Place the headgear, cushion and frame on a flat surface lined with a towel to dry out of direct sunlight.
Are CPAP machines and supplies covered by insurance?

Sanford Health Equip accepts most insurances. Before ordering any supplies or replacements, we recommend contacting your insurance provider to review what is covered under your plan.
